St-Émilion has the longest history in wine production in Bordeaux—longer than the Left Bank—dating back to an 8th century monk named Saint Émilion who became a hermit in one of the many limestone caves scattered throughout the area.

Chateau La Gaffeliere Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2018 (Premier Grand Cru Classé) $168

The 2018 La Gaffelière remains quite backward on the nose; the aromatics are biding their time but will be very attractive, offering pure black cherry, bilberry and light marine aromas that are very well defined. The palate is underpinned by fine, almost filigreed tannins and a superb bead of acidity. This La Gaffelière is harmonious on the finish with seamlessly integrated oak. It should mature beautifully over the next 20–30 years and evolve into one of the standout Saint-Émilions of this vintage.

Chateau Belair Monange Annonce Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2014 $188

The 2014 Belair-Monange was a slightly perplexing wine when I tasted it from barrel, so I was intrigued to discover how it would perform now in bottle. It has what you might describe as a "straight-laced" bouquet: very direct and nicely delineated, albeit without the frills and nuances of some of the best Saint Emilion wines this vintage. There is an attractive wilted rose petal aroma that emerges with aeration, but I was seeking more intensity. The palate is better than the aromatics: silky smooth in texture, well-judged acidity, genuine depth and gentle grip in the mouth. There is tangible mineralité here, great focus with a sense of tension and "bite" towards the finish. I was probably being parsimonious with my score in barrel, although that is partly vindicated by the nose that needs to get its act together and match the potential of the palate. Let's see how this develops over the next few years.

Chateau de Pressac Saint Emilion Grand Cru (Grand Cru Classé) 2018 - Coming Soon

Under a very dark and brilliant purplish red color, the Château De Pressac reveals an intense and complex aromatic bouquet. Aromas of black fruits, such as plum or blueberry, mingle with notes of vanilla, coffee, liquorice and sweet spices. At the palate too, the Château de Pressac is of great generosity and gluttony. The tannins are polished but with a nice mache. The finish is concentrated, dominated by the aromas of black fruits which soar in a very voluptuous finish.
