Wines are made out of different “cépages”

250 grape varieties for wine purpose

There is not a single vine variety, but more than 10,000 worldwide! These varieties are called the “cépages”. Only 250 of them are grown for wine production yet a little more than 12 cépages are used to make almost 75% of the wines.

A cepage is a wine’s flavor signature

Each “cépage” has its own specificities. They are all different in terms shapes, colors and flavors. The cépage will provide a different taste and texture to the wine. A cépage is chosen according to the “terroir”, to the juice yield and to the blend of the wine.

That is why each region in France grows specific “cépages” among the 250 varieties and comes out with so many types of wines.
