Champagne Billecart-Salmon was founded in 1818 in the village of Mareuil-sur-Aÿ near Epernay.
It all started here in 1818 when Nicolas François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon were married, marking the creation of their Champagne House.
This has been a family story since the beginning with Louis Salmon, brother of Elisabeth and a passionate oenologist, getting involved in the creation of the wines.
Thus, over 7 generations, each member of the family has endeavoured to continue the family tradition, staying faithful to the same motto: "Give priority to quality, strive for excellence".
It remains family-owned and run; Mathieu Roland-Billecart represents the seventh generation here, following in the footsteps of founders Nicolas-François Billecart and Elisabeth Salmon.
Billecart-Salmon is a large Champagne House, with around 100 hectares of vines of its own.
The process of organic conversion for the vineyards was started in 2019. The house also buys fruit from growers covering another 300 hectares of vines across 40 crus of the Champagne region.
Most of the fruit comes from the Champagne sub-regions of Montagne de Reims, Vallée de la Marne and Côte des Blancs.
The champagnes of Maison Billecart-Salmon are above all created thanks to the knowledge of the men who rigorously cultivate an estate of 100 hectares, obtaining grapes from an area totalling 300 hectares
2013 was a solid vintage. Winter and spring were wet, hydrating the soils for the growing season ahead. Summer was mild, with no major heat spikes or freak weather patterns.
The cooler temperatures meant a long growing season and a harvest that took place relatively late by modern standards.
The best wines have a lovely balance, thanks to long, even ripening.
Billecart-Salmon Vintage 2013 Champagne is exquisitely balanced and elegant.
Comprised of 62% Pinot Noir, 24% Chardonnay and 14% Meunier, the grapes come from mostly Premier and Grand Cru vineyards across the Montagne de Reims, Côte des Blancs and Vallée de la Marne. The wine underwent 89 months on the lees, resulting in a slow evolution of autolytic characters and great freshness.
“A vibrant Champagne, finely balanced and lacy in texture, serving as an elegant canvas for layered flavours of yellow peach, chopped almond, cherry, toast point and preserved lemon. Minerally smoke, chalk and spice notes play on the finish.” 94 Points - Wine Spectator
“A creamy and fresh Champagne with aromas of croissants, brioche, lemon curd, white cocoa and marmalade. Silky bubbles. Lovely pastry notes and an elegant finish.” 93 Points - James Suckling
