Château Tanunda, birthplace of the Barossa, was established in 1890 and is the site of some of the Valley’s first vines planted as well as its first winery. The history and size of Chateau Tanunda is comparable to many of the famous French Chateau. From the outside, this looks like a major winery, but it is a Château in every sense of the word. In fact, it is the only Barossa winery that has European Union endorsement to use the word ‘Château’ on our labels.”
The first European immigrants had been planting vines in the Barossa since the 1840 and the founder's grand vision was to build a Château dedicated to crafting fine quality wines. Château Tanunda would become for a while the largest winery in the Southern Hemisphere.
A veritable “Ivy League” of Australian winemakers worked or studied at the facility, including Prof. Soebels, Australia’s first qualified oenologist; Bill Seppelt; Grant Burge; Geoff Merrill and others. In 1994, in recognition of its rich history, Château Tanunda was placed on the Register of State Heritage Places
In 2010 Chateau Tanunda was not only designated as a 5 Star Winery, it also won two International Wine & Spirit Competition's (IWSC which was founded in 1969) Trophies and was also named Australian Wine Producer Of The Year.
In addition to the international awards Château Tanunda’s wines have been acknowledged by some of the world’s most influential wine publications including Decanter, The Wine Advocate and Wine Spectator. It was a real achievement for Château Tanunda’s Grand Barossa Shiraz 2008 to hit #4 in Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Outstanding Value Wines of the World 2011 making it the highest ranked Australian wine on the list.
The Wine Advocate rated Château Tanunda one of Australia's Top Twenty Best Value Producers for 2011 saying of the wines “Clean, pure, unpretentious and exquisitely made, these are must-buys for a true taste of the Barossa”.
Chateau Tanunda was also rated a 5 Red STAR Winery in James Halliday Wine Companion 2013.
The Château ‘100 Year Old Vines’ Semillon 2013 was selected as one of only ten wines to represent the Australian wine industry, served to dignitaries at the Official Banquet for the G20 summit in 2014.
In 2020, the Château celebrates its 130th anniversary proudly ranked amongst the top 20 wineries in Australia (Huon Hooke), a Red Five Star Winery (Halliday) and amongst the top Chateau in the world (Berlin Wine Trophy Best Australian Producer 2011-2019).
With over 350 acres of vineyards situated in Tanunda, Bethany, Vine Vale and Eden Valley, Château Tanunda has an enviable array of high-quality fruit to choose from to craft wines of distinction.
The essence of these old vines is captured in the Chateau Tanunda Old Vine Expressions collection, which showcases the best of the Barossa from a selection of 50, 100 and 150 year old vines. This includes our 1858 Field Blend, possibly the oldest planting of Grenache, Malbec and Mourvedre in the world, as well as some of the oldest Semillon vines planted in 1850.
Château Tanunda crafts superb wines that are sourced from the finest quality Barossa fruit. The wines are handcrafted by combining traditional methods and modern technology. The limited release wines are hand-picked, destemmed but not crushed, basket pressed and are neither fined nor filtered. There is minimal intervention to allow the true character of the grapes to express themselves.
“Clean, pure, unpretentious and exquisitely made, these are must-buys for a true taste of the Barossa” The Wine Advocate
