Sommelier's Notes

Château d'Armailhac, a Fifth Growth Pauillac estate owned by the Baron Philippe de Rothschild family since 1933, is managed alongside Mouton Rothschild and Clerc Milon.

Today Baroness Philippine’s children, Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild continue the family’s quest for excellence and innovation in the vineyard and winery.

The 76-hectare estate is managed alongside stablemates Château Mouton Rothschild and Château Clerc Milon; expertise is shared across the properties.

Its south-facing vineyard, located next to Château Mouton Rothschild is made up of deep, gravelly soil which is primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, followed by Merlot (35%), Cabernet Franc (8%, from old vines), and Petit Verdot (2%).

The wine is known for its high proportion of 60 years old-vine Cabernet Franc. Grapes are hand-harvested, sorted, and destemmed.

“Berries and smoke with some wet-earth and leather undertones. Medium to full body, round and velvety tannins and a juicy and delicious finish. Like the walnut and coffee undertone. Drink in 2020.”

- JS, JamesSuckling.com

“Tasted blind. Greyish crimson. Aromatic and easy and fresh. Nice balance and pretty chewy and drying on the end. A bit light.

Drink 2024-2040 16/20 points”

- JR, JancisRobinson.com

“Made by the team at Mouton Rothschild, the 2015 Château D’Armailhac is a ripe, sexy 2015 that has plenty of power and depth in its cassis, lead pencil shaving, spice, and roasted herbs aromas and flavors. The 2015 is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon blended with roughly 30% Merlot and the balance Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, and it’s medium to full-bodied, balanced, nicely concentrated and should keep for two decades or more. 2018 - 2038”

Did you know?: Baron Philippe de Rothschild acquired Château d’Armailhac (Mouton d’Armailhacq) in 1933. He renamed it Château Mouton Baron Philippe from the 1934 vintage, then Château Mouton Baronne Philippe in tribute to Baroness Pauline, Philippe de Rothschild’s second wife. Baroness Philippine decided to restore the name of Château d’Armailhac in 1989, after her father’s death.

The wine is dark and deep with purple tints.
The intense and complex nose exhales perfectly ripe fruit aromas followed with airing by succulent roast coffee and blackberry notes.
From a full and dense attack, the mid-palate reveals elegant and well-rounded tannins which underpin liquorice flavours with hints of refined and elegant oak. The long and flavourful finish lingers on red fruit flavours and chocolate notes
