Sommelier's Notes

The Carles Vineyards were established by Jean-Claude Carles and his wife Marie-Danielle Carles to consolidate and cultivate family properties acquired over the years in the St-Emilion terroir.

Château Panet serves as the flagship of the estate, having been handed down from Jean-Claude's great aunt in 1924, and it now serves as the main production site.

Jean-Claude was deeply passionate about wine and vineyard work, and he continued to expand the vineyard holdings.

In 1948, he acquired Clos La Rose, an area with significant potential due to its diverse soils, which brought novelty to the estate's range of wines.

In 1957, he purchased Château Haut-Fonrazade, a property that allowed him to meet the high demand for wine in the post-war years.

In 1961, he fell in love with Château Coudert, a beautiful and promising site that he added to his vineyards.

Alongside his wife, Marie-Danielle, they decided to completely renovate the building while preserving the majestic tower dating back to around 1800.

This became their family home and the vineyard for one of their finest wines.

In 1994, Mrs. Carles inherited a portion of the family estate in Pomerol and created the vintage Château Croix des Rouzes, expanding the Carles Vineyards into the prestigious Bordeaux wine appellation, Pomerol.

Today, the legacy is carried on by Jérôme and Gilles Carles, the two sons who have taken the reins of the family business and are actively contributing to its growth.

Together, they acquired Clos Jacquemeau in 1999 to produce their own vintage. They bring a fresh perspective to the family business, introducing a new management style focused on building strong relationships to strengthen the team's cohesion.

Additionally, they implement new technologies and innovations to showcase the estate's vintages.

Maison Carles Chateau Coudert Saint Emilion Grand Cru 2015 with it's 90% Merlot supplemented by 10% Cabernet Franc and the average age of the vines are 45 years old.

This 2015 embodies the Libournais style well: very dark colour, black cherry; powerful nose, on very ripe forest fruits, embellished with a floral touch and a vanilla woodiness; warm, exuberant palate, rich in candied fruit, structured by quality woody tannins. The profile of a remarkable wine for laying down.

"The 2015 Coudert is decidedly ripe, plummy, and flamboyant. Crème de cassis, raspberry, hard candy, sweet spices, menthol, and new leather are all pushed forward in this racy Saint-Émilion. This is one of the riper 2015 Saint-Émilions I tasted, yet there is a good deal of floral-infused aromatic lift that provides just enough freshness to keep things in check."
