Sommelier's Notes

In 1998, Philippe Porcheron met Roger REX and acquired his first hectares of vines on the extraordinary terroir of Margaux.

With the advice of Jean-Luc Thunevin and Muriel Andraud, producer of Château de Valandraud, Philippe strives to produce a wine with infinite care: manual stripping, green harvesting, very low yield, over-ripe grapes. Anything less than perfect is relentlessly eliminated. This perfectionist approach, combined with the fabulous terroir of Margaux, has made it possible to obtain sumptuous grapes with thick skin, dark black and bursting with sugar.

In the fall of 1999, the first cuvée held in Roger Rex's Garage, Margaux's first garage wine was born and it was baptized "Marojallia"!

Bernard Ginestet, writer and illustrious character of Margaux, is then owner of a magnificent building. The house located at the entrance to the village of Margaux looks like a sleeping beauty, with a slightly tired roof and creaking shutters, but this house has a soul. In 2001, Philippe PORCHERON acquired the residence of Bernard Ginestet which was renamed Château Marojallia.

This wine met with extraordinary success from the first tastings: “Very rich, fruity, scents of vanilla, blackcurrant and liquorice, an intense purple color associated with a roundness, a very long finish”; “Never seen since 1945”. The scores attributed to this wine place it among the greatest wines of Bordeaux.

All opinions point in the same direction: “Château Marojallia is a great wine”.

Marojallia is a Medoc “garagiste” wine that in its short history has developed a cult following.

A Garagistes' Wine refers to a group of winemakers in the Bordeaux region, producing "Vins de garage", "Garage wine". The group emerged in the mid-1990s in reaction to the traditional style of red Bordeaux wine, which is highly tannic and requires long ageing in the bottle to become drinkable. The garagistes developed a style more consistent with perceived international wine tastes.

For red wines this means "bigger, bolder, fruitier wines, often with sometimes a higher alcohol content." The wines produced by these estates often receive very high wine ratings from Robert Parker (a US wine critic), and are usually sold at prices driven high by rarity, hyperbole, and fashion.

Clos Margalain is the second wine of Chateau Marojallia. Clos Margalaine consists of four hectares of deep, gravelly soils located between the estates of Le Tertre and Monbrison.

The second wine of Château Marojallia, benefits from the same facilities and know-how as Marojallia. This wine is produced from the youngest vines, located in the courtyard of Château Marojallia in Margaux. It blend with a higher composition of Merlot, seduces with its finesse and elegance.

About 20,000 bottles of Clos Margalaine are made annually.

It boasts medium-bodied, elegant, perfumed notes of black raspberries (maybe even some strawberry), spring flowers, toasted spices, and forest floor. About as fine and elegant as they come, yet with plenty of balance and length
