Château de Malleret is a beautiful Haut Médoc estate that combines a grand residence with superb quality wine for a surprisingly modest price. It’s now three centuries old and for most of that time was the property of the Clossmann family. Today it’s in the capable hands of Bruno Vonderheyden and Florence Deguillaume, who have invested significantly in the estate’s 54 hectares of vines and grand cellars. 2016 was a fine classic vintage, not as fruit forward and accessible as 2015, but one that has aged very well. Matured in French oak, this silky Bordeaux made primarily from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon is a real charmer. Decant an hour before serving. It'll be a fine match with grilled meats, coq au vin or a rich veggie casserole.
One of Haut-Médoc’s great Cru Bourgeois estates, Château de Malleret is making wines that aspire to be as impressive as the crus classés. With 93 Suckling Points, plus three other 90+ scores, this elegant, silky fruit claret seems to be succeeding.
