Sommelier's Notes

The wine Loire region is known for its many small producers such as Domaine Desroches-Mancois, with a "down to earth" approach to making wine.

A two-hour drive south of Paris, the Loire, France's longest river, winds its way through a valley over 1,000 km from the mountainous area around the Ardéche to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean. The first time the river meets vineyards is in Sancerre ─ a famous white wine district ─ located right in the middle of France. For the next 800 km, the Loire runs through a landscape of 75,000 hectares of vineyards, 87 different AOC appellations and more than 4,000 vineyards to the one at Nantes runs through the Muscadet de Sévre-et-Maine known for its fresh white wines and oysters. The Loire Valley has played a vital role in French wine history for centuries, and one of the region's trump cards is diversity: a wide range of white and red wines, rosé wines, crunchy and honey-sweet wines, as well as sparkling wines not to be forgotten.

But almost half of Loire's wine production is white with the Sauvignon Blanc grape (SB) in the driver's jersey. SB is an international grape variety in a class of its own, grown in more than 30 countries and has an eighth place on the list of the world's most widespread grape varieties.

In the Loire, since the Middle Ages, winemakers have refined the art of making SB wines and learned to tame the violent aromas. Loire's cool climate and calcareous soil, together with centuries of experience, produce elegant, acidic SB wines that are still faithful to the aroma palette of the grape, but well-balanced and discreet with a finesse you never get tired of.

Aurélie Mancois makes Touraine Sauvignon on fruit harvested from 5-20 year old vines. After cool fermentation and storage in a steel tank, the wine is bottled in February. Straw yellow in the glass gives the wine an inviting aroma of gooseberries, boxwood and honeysuckle. The rich, aromatic taste has notes of peach, lime and passion fruit with good length and the typical fruit acid as a finish.

A wonderful wine for everything good from the sea, of course, but also an excellent companion to salads and pies like the classic French onion pie. France has also landed 1001 goat cheeses, and in Touraine you drink Sauvignon Blanc with the local fromage de Chèvre - a heavenly match when the cheese is fresh and freshly made.
