WINE CLASSIFICATION: 1855 Bordeaux Classification 3rd Growths
Lucien Guillemet, the owner of Château Boyd-Cantenac, classified Third Cru Margaux, brings together no less than 4 grape varieties in this first wine: around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, a quarter of Merlot and the rest are Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vines occupy a soil that suits them wonderfully, with well-draining siliceous gravel.
After manual harvesting, vinification takes place in stainless steel and cement vats before maturing for 12 to 18 months in stave oak barrels, a high proportion of which is new wood. You will find in this bottle the harmony, the elegance, the volume and the power which characterizes the Grands Margaux. The tannins, very present and well-framed, speak in favour of long ageing in order to reveal the full potential of this wine.
Quite a lot of smoky oak to this medium-bodied wine, and it does dominate the fruit a bit. The finish is rather chewy as a result of the oak.
