The vineyards of Poggio Antico rest on the highest hills of Montalcino. A 35-hectare (86 acres) vineyard area is cultivated at an altitude of almost 500 meters (1,640 ft).
The ancient and mixed soil is made up of calcareous rock and galestro (marl) forcing the Sangiovese grape to bring out its best expression, resulting in complex and elegant wines: the iconic Brunello.
Managing the vineyards to us means precision and constant presence among the rows . Thorough geological research allowed to classify Poggio Antico vineyards in 6 Macro units and 15 Soil Units: these represent the estate’s micro terroirs and are harvested and vinified separately.
Poggio Antico is the soaring home of Brunello: an exclusive experience in the light and colours of the most authentic Tuscany.
The variety of soils present in Poggio Antico offers rich and complex nuances: different expressions of the same vine can be found within the same vineyard.
Thus emerged the Soil Units: 15 micro terroirs and 6 Macro units that enhance the Estate’s “geological symphony”.
The Soil Units go beyond the idea of «vineyard», dividing the 35-hectare property in areas with soils having the same characteristics, which can be found on different plots.
Each Soil Unit is a “voice” of Poggio Antico, a unique and possible expression of its terroir.
The Soil Units offer an insight on the “natural origins” of each vineyard, identifying the needs of each area and the right time for harvest.
In the cellar, the Soil Units are vinified and fermented separately.
After tasting the fruit of every single vinification, the “sound” of each Unit is harmonized to create the final wine.
Poggio Antico is an excellent producer and this Riserva shows the best of Montalcino tradition.
The Riserva is exclusively produced during the best vintages following an even more scrupulous grape selection
A wine of outstanding structure, it is enhanced by a very long aging period in French and Slavonian oak barrels.
This is a particularly elegant wine that emphasizes harmonious aromas of black fruit, spice and polished mineral.
