Sommelier's Notes

Founded in 1825, Joseph Perrier has been owned and run by the same family since 1888.

Champagne Joseph Perrier is proud of its history and unique situation as the sole Champagne House in the ancient city of Chalons-en-Champagne.

Joseph Perrier owns some beautiful vineyards around 21 hectares in the heart of Champagne, on the right bank of the Marne Valley, around Hautvillers and Cumières, two villages classified 93% in the echelle des crus, where Pinot Noir is mainly planted but also with two hectares of Chardonnay.

Always family owned, 5 generations later it is managed today by Jean-Claude Fourmon. As the head of the operation is Jean Claude Fourmon, whose passion for his wines ensures he uses only the highest quality fruit to protect the integrity of his flavours. The only remaining House making champagne in Chalons-en-Champagne, its cellars are carved straight into the chalk hillside. These Gallo-Roman galleries incorporate skylights and a reflector to bring to some a little daylight.

Each separate champagne cuvee created by Joseph PERRIER has a clear and distinct character while retaining a recognizable House style.

In addition to the Cuvées Royales, a distinction used to celebrate the era supplying Queen Victoria and King Edward VII, the House has created many rare and precious vintages and in the prestige cuvee Joséphine, the ultimate expression of the cellar master’s art.

The Wine

Joseph Perrier's Cuvée Royale Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs Vintage 2010 is produced from the house’s best Pinot Noir grapes. The eponymous plot is located in Cumières, at the foot of the famous Montagne de Reims.

This uniquely expressive cuvée was born in 2007, the house wishing to enhance this terroir through a unique cuvée combining a parcel, a grape variety and a year.

Although January was particularly cool, conditions were milder from March onwards. The cool nights in June delayed the flowering period. July was marked by strong heat combined with stormy spells. September was hot and sunny. Although all these conditions led to a slow and late ripening, the harvest boasted a high-quality and the grapes showcased perfect sugar levels.

Vinification and Aging

This Cuvée Royale Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs Vintage 2010 by Joseph Perrier is aged for a minimum of 7 years on lees. Disgorgement is carries out in small batches. As its name indicates, no dosage has been added.

This vintage draws its essence from the conjuncture of exceptional meteorological events. The year was cool and rainy, giving our historical plot “La Côte à Bras” beautiful and juicy grapes.
