Sommelier's Notes

The noble house of Gassies in Margaux traces its roots back to the 14th century.

In the 17th century, Chevalier Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan, influenced by his time at Château Latour, established the prestigious Domaine de Rauzan vineyard, earning a stellar reputation for its wines.

A legendary event where birds seemingly protected the vines during a hailstorm led to the vineyard's winged coat of arms.

In 1763, Domaine de Rauzan was split, giving rise to Château Rauzan-Gassies, recognized as a Second Growth in the 1855 classification.

Renowned wine enthusiast Paul Quié took ownership in 1946, followed by his son Jean-Michel, who oversaw extensive renovations and modernization.

Anne-Françoise and Jean-Philippe, Paul Quié's children, joined the family legacy in 2000, continuing the estate's development.

In 2012, they expanded by acquiring Château Bel Orme Tronquoy-de-Lalande, extending their vineyard across Margaux and Haut-Médoc to over 30 hectares each.

Their dedication to excellence in winemaking is evident in their ongoing efforts to refine and improve their processes, emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between exceptional terroirs and passionate people.

The Château's rich history and commitment to environmental stewardship are evident in its diverse natural areas of forests, meadows, and marshes, which coexist harmoniously with its vineyards.

These areas, including parts of the Natura 2000 site, serve to preserve local fauna and flora, with forests providing habitats for wildlife, hedges supporting biodiversity, and meadows maintained by cattle for natural fertilization.

The vineyard, spread over 30 hectares on prestigious Margaux hillsides, benefits from tailored soil tillage and optimal drainage, resulting in refined and elegant wines dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, with contributions from Merlot and Petit Verdot, reflecting the essence of the finest Margaux crus.

The 2012 vintage of Château Rauzan-Gassies is characterized by its deep color, extending tightly to the rim.

The wine exhibits a resinous quality and depth, accompanied by subtle creamy blackcurrant notes and a hint of perfume on the nose.

On the palate, it offers an attractive expression of Margaux, showcasing plenty of ripe, perfumed fruit flavours and soft, well-integrated tannins.

The wine also displays a lively sap and vitality, contributing to its overall balance and appeal.

This vintage represents a notable achievement for Rauzan-Gassies, standing out as one of the finest wines produced by the estate in recent years.

Did you know?: 300 years ago, a severe hailstorm destroyed the vineyards across the Margaux region, singularly sparing the vines of chevalier de Rauzan. Thus, a rumour began circulating that birds had protected the clusters with their wings over the Gassies locality. Even today, all the wine labels of the Château display a winged coat of arms in memory of this enchantment.
