Sommelier's Notes

Pouilly-Fumé is, to many, the finest expression of Sauvignon Blanc in France. It has a signature smokiness ('Fumé' is French for 'smoke). This one is made by one of the most-experienced family wineries in the region. André Figeat and his father Edmond who has imparted to him the RESPECT OF THE LAND and the PATIENCE that allow harvesting the grapes at the good maturity.

Before him, his father Ferdinand pressed with his brother Edme, assisted by their father Louis Figeat, nicknamed CULLUS.

André Figeat represents the sixth generation of père et fils to oversee this family domaine. Expertly trained by his father, Edmond, he tends vineyards predominantly planted to Sauvignon in diverse terroirs of the commune of Pouilly-sur-Loire and on the neighboring Côte du Nozet.

Like most successful vignerons, the Figeats cut no corners in their vineyards. In the modern cellar, temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks are used for both fermentation and aging to capture and preserve the Sauvignon character of each Pouilly-Fumé terroir.

Domaine Figeat produces two classic, but quite different Pouilly-Fumés: Les Chaumiennes and Côte du Nozet (near La Doucette). In exceptional vintages, the Figeats also produce a prestige cuvée from their oldest vine parcel they call Les Chailloux, which is comprised of flinty silex soil with large stones. In 2019, André’s daughter Anne-Sophie joined the family business after studying chemistry and wine.

Over the decades, the vineyards Figeat, that currently owns 17 hectares of grapevines, has acquired parcels after parcels, exceptional lands that reveal a Sauvignon grape, where typical, freshness and delicacy are mixed.

The attachment and the taking root of the Figeat family to the Pouilly lands, as a result wine is a PASSION,

Grapes of Pouilly Fumé appellation comes from the grape Sauvignon once at maturity, are covered with a grey bloom, with a smoke colour.

The « Fumé » name can also be explained by its mineral taste, characteristic of flint, coming from flint land.

This wine is young, ripe with apple and citrus fruits and tangy, zesty acidity. The wine also has a strong herbaceous character that will soften while leaving behind a tight, mineral texture.
