Château d’Etroyes is a 50-hectare estate located in the Mercurey and Rully appellations in eastern France.
The Clos l’Évêque has long been considered one of the best vineyards in Mercurey, especially since the 18th century when it belonged to the Diocese of Chalon-sur-Saône and the wines were used for the bishop’s reception, for which only the absolute finest wines qualified.
The soils here are clay and limestone, with a liberal scattering of small pebbles providing adequate drainage for the vines.
The Bollinger Group has snapped up French wine estate Château d’Etroyes, adding wine from the Burgundy appellations Mercurey and Rully to its roster.
The deal was completed through the Bollinger Group’s winery Domaine Chanson, which it acquired in 1999.
This is one of the classic cuvees – made from whole vineyards as opposed to plots within a vineyard.
The 2017 vintage is a pretty garnet color, limpid and brilliant.
The nose evokes ripe red and black fruits (raspberry, cherry, blackberry, blueberry). Airing is enriched with finely woody notes, roasting, cocoa and a touch of liquorice.
A superb palate with an ample, full, round and fleshy attack with a fruity expression of beautiful purity.
Its bouquet is crammed with cherries and cherry stones, and it’s vividly fruity, airy, and open – not at all dense. This has a lively, fresh stance with a lovely expansive nose.
