Sommelier's Notes

Château La Gurgue 2015 is a very beautiful red wine from Bordeaux. It is a Margaux appellation. Since 2015, this wine has been certified organic. Since the 2017 vintage, La Gurgue has been biodynamic.

Château La Gurgue was bought in 1979 by Jacques Merlaut, creator of the Taillan group which operates in the field of viticulture. Following this purchase, he entrusted the responsibility to his daughter Bernadette Villars. She previously worked at Château Chasse-Spleen. Vintage after vintage, she has the cellar, the vat room, and especially the vineyard, which was in poor condition, redone.

Claire Villars-Lurton took over at Château La Gurgue, being her daughter. Gonzague Lurton and her also own Château Ferrière, Château Durfort Vivens and Château Haut-Bages Liberal. All are converted into biodynamic vineyards. In the 2003 vintage, Château La Gurgue was recognized as a Cru Bourgeois Supérieur. This is the result of his constant involvement in continuing to renovate the cellar, the vat room, the vineyard and the production tools. This is recognition of the quality of the great red wines produced on this magnificent terroir.

The vineyard of Château La Gurgue is surrounded by the vines of the famous Château Margaux. It is located at a place called Curton. The 10 hectares of vines that make it up share an exceptional terroir made up of gravel that can be very deep. They are fine and promote the rapid maturation of the grapes of the new vintage. Another facet of this beautiful terroir is represented by the sandy-gravel soils. 35 years old on average, the vines are planted here with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot. By exploiting the terroir, these grape varieties offer very fine and elegant wines.

The 2015 vintage is a precise blend of power and smoothness of the tannic structure of this vintage.

94 James Suckling - Jamessuckling.com

"A stylish array of chocolate, earth and dark berries leads to a palate that follows in the same vein of flavors with blackberry compote. The finish is cast amid plush, open-knit tannins. Great depth here. Try from 2022."

91 Wine Spectator

"Mulled plum, blackberry and black cherry fruit glides along singed vanilla and sandalwood notes. The silky, black tea–infused finish is relatively open-knit, with a light tarry echo for added spine. Best from 2019 through 2028. 4,167 cases made. — JM"

90 Antonio Galloni - Vinous

"The 2015 La Gurgue has turned out very nicely. Pliant, forward and supple, the 2015 offers quite a bit of near and medium term appeal. Sweet red berry, tobacco, menthol, licorice and crushed flowers add nuance that was not evident when I tasted the wine as a barrel sample."
